Hope From the Weeping Prophet

The first 24 chapters of the book of Jeremiah paint a dark picture of Idolatry, corruption and rampant social injustice. Jeremiah is often called the weeping prophet, and in times like that it’s not hard to empathize with him. He proclaims the judgement of Israel, the destruction of Jerusalem and ultimately the exile of the people of God under Babylonian rule.

A short while ago a friend and member of my congregation passed away. We both shared prairie roots hence we could readily identify with many elements of the stories we shared when I visited him. Fred, in his younger years had been a bush pilot and when he talked about his plane and flying over the prairie grassland I quickly became aware of the deep joy he had when flying.

Listen to the Bells

Like God’s creation, life consists of seasons.  For many people, the months of July and August are a distinct season of life.  It is a season when students are out of school, people take time off work, and family vacations happen.  It is often a slower pace of life which we usually see reflected in the church calendar as well.  It is a season where vacation from work is taken and there is more time for rest and recreation.
