Message from our Eco-Minister

May 1st

April 2024  smiling Wendy Janzen

As we welcome May as a month of budding, flowering, and gardening, we also know that worship planners are thinking ahead to summer (and probably fall already, too)!

The Summer Leader Magazine (from MennoMedia) is featuring summer worship resources developed by the Mennonite Wild Church Ministerial convened by me. Seeing as these materials are a bit of a departure from regular worship, MennoMedia is hosting a webinar on Tuesday, May 14 at 3:00 pm Eastern, featuring myself and a few of the other contributors. It will be a chance to find out more about this style of outdoor worship, how to adapt it to your context, and to ask your questions.

Find out more and register on the MennoMedia website. All who register will receive a free copy of the Summer Wild Church worship materials (if you aren’t already subscribers). Also, if you are interested in joining the Mennonite Wild Church Ministerial that meets bi-monthly, you can sign up by filling out this short form. We are a bi-national group of pastors and lay leaders who are exploring or already leading intentional outdoor worship gatherings.

Finally, at our Annual Church Gathering in Leamington this past weekend, we used the firefly as a symbol for our theme, “Inspired by Hope.” Did you know there are 29 species of fireflies in Eastern Canada?! Many of them have populations that are in decline due to disappearing habitat, pesticide use, and light pollution. Perhaps your congregation would like to create habitat for these amazing little beetles that are a unique part of God’s community of creation. Whether you are urban or rural, if you have property with a bit of green space, take a look at firefly.org to see how you could create a firefly friendly yard!
