Called to Action: A Story from the MCEC Annual Church Gathering 2025
April 30th

On the morning of April 26, 2025, screens across Mennonite Church Eastern Canada lit up as over 150 participants—from 70 congregations—gathered online for the 38th Annual Church Gathering. While we were not together in the same room, a shared sense of purpose and faith filled the virtual space.
This year’s gathering, held online to accommodate our preparations for hosting MC Canada Gathering 2025 in July, began with a few unexpected tech hiccups. But with patience, good humour and the quick response of the support team, the morning quickly settled into a meaningful rhythm of worship, reflection and decision-making.
Our theme, Called to Action by the Power of the Holy Spirit, set the tone for all that followed.
We were reminded of who we are together: a diverse and faithful community, now made up of 109 congregations, bound not just by geography or structure, but by a Spirit-led commitment to follow Christ, support one another and embody God’s reconciling love in the world.
The gathering opened with a beautiful prayer from Michael Pahl, executive minister of MC Manitoba. Grounded in the words of the Lord’s Prayer, Michael’s blessing called us to align our hearts with God’s will “on earth as it is in heaven”—not just as a prayer for that day, but for the road ahead.
Our theme, Called to Action by the Power of the Holy Spirit, set the tone for all that followed. Executive Minister Anthony Siegrist invited us to consider what it means to respond to the Spirit’s call in this season of church life. “God’s ministry of reconciliation is holy, holistic, and humble,” he reminded us. “My hope is that we’ll be known by the humble fruit we bear.”
Five congregations were recognized: three entering into provisional membership, and two transitioning into full membership.
Business sessions focused on key decisions: approving financial statements and the spending plan, affirming the work of the Executive Council and welcoming new volunteers and leaders into service. All motions were carried with strong support, signaling the trust and shared commitment that runs through our community.
And there was cause for celebration too. Five congregations were recognized: three entering into provisional membership, and two transitioning into full membership. Each of these communities brings a unique story, a distinct voice and a shared calling to MCEC. Their official welcome will take place this July at the nationwide gathering in Kitchener-Waterloo.
The meeting also offered space for reflection. We were invited to consider a question that continues beyond the gathering: What do meaningful connections—between congregations, councils, and staff—look and feel like to you?
It’s a question worth taking home to your congregation. Talk about it in your leadership meetings and bring it to your church councils. The insights you offer will help shape how MCEC continues to serve and support churches in the years ahead.
We closed our time not just with reports and motions passed, but with renewed purpose. As a regional church, our mission remains clear: to energize congregations in worship, discipleship, and mission; encourage leaders of hope and transformation; and embody God’s reconciling ministry for all creation.
Thank you to all who made time to be with us. Your presence, your faith and your voices help strengthen this shared journey of being church—together.

Eliot Chandler Burns leads in a closing prayer
God, whose name is love,
Thank you for the work of MCEC. Thank you for the dedicated people who work to energize congregations in worship, discipleship and mission and encourage leaders of hope, vision and transformation, and for the 109 congregations that work to embody God's reconciling ministry for all creation.
Thank you for calling us into this holy and humble ministry of reconciliation and for the power of the Holy Spirit that empowers us in this work. Your spirit is a gift among us, and we are so grateful.
Thank you for calling and forming us as we go from here, go with us.
Walk with us wherever we find ourselves, carry us when we need comfort, and continue to empower us in your calling towards reconciliation for all.
Save us from the temptation to lust for power and bring your fruit through our very lives as we continue to strive towards belovedness, spirituality, transformation, community, hospitality, and peace and justice. Amen.
